Life 2.0

A new time is upon us all. One, I never thought I would see... A time when staff are encouraged to write a blog about working. This is a very unique concept. So as I am sitting here in the back room of the Circulation division (where upon further investigation I have spent a lot of my time), I am thinking about what I want to say on this blog...

For just over 8 years, I have been a staff member at CML (Columbus Metropolitan Library). I have been a proud member of this illustrious institution. I remember back then when I tripped upon this job by accident. But I don't have much faith in coincidence so somehow--it was all by design. Now, I am here still, and as my time here continues, I see that there is a change that has begun in our culture, one that I have been (unknowingly) a part of for a long time, and I know I will probably be there for a long time to come. I remember a short time ago when many of us were still using dial-up to get online. Now we have broadband, wireless connections making dial-up obsolete.

Further, we now have smartphones that have full keyboards to allow us to connect through text messaging and the the like. And I have had a chance to use all of these devices--and some of which I use, some of which I don't. It amazes me of how much technology has influenced all of our everyday lives--and even in our jobs.

I have a home computer like a good chunk of the world--and I love it, but by the time I get home from work, I don't want to bother with it... I just want to "detech" myself and veg on the couch for a while and chill out. I have this rule after work... My cell goes off at 7PM or 10PM at night. I don't see anyone contacting me after that point for anything. Even though that is on my hip almost all day--it doesn't mean I use it... It's all a balancing act.

However, just to share, when I have time, I do some writing, like some fan fiction--I even use Photoshop to create icons or some art work based upon it. I learned from doing smaller pieces several years ago, and I think I have come a long way, but there is still so much to learn.

As an example, I am posting what my desk looked like about a year ago... I know... I had too much time on my hands, but still it's proof positive that my job is my second home.

Great comments about Dial-up and Smart Phones. Those examples show how fast technology moves.

you're not kidding. It happens so quick, that if you blink--you'll miss it. What's funny is, that even after all this time and technological boom, we still need the old stand bys at times--like a landline, a "regular" cell phone... some people still use a classic typewriter... It just goes to show you that in some way all of these things have made an impact somewhere...
